There are chairs inside the new Frios Gourmet Pops store in downtown Montgomery, but Troy Stubbs is fine with you not using them.
“We’d much rather you get out and walk,” Frios co-owner Stubbs said. “Go visit the other restaurants, the other vendors, the other boutiques. Go and see those people and let them know that you appreciate them being committed to the downtown Montgomery area.”
Of course, he’d prefer that you do that with a popsicle in hand.
Frios at 36 Dexter Ave. sells unique, custom pops with a focus on natural and local ingredients, cooked up by chefs in the chain’s home base of Gadsden. That includes ice-based fruit pops like strawberry (filled with Alabama strawberries) and dairy-based pops like key lime pie (which has a graham cracker crust inside the pop).
They also sell specialty flavors each season, including frozen hot chocolate and eggnog popsicles this winter.
Troy and his wife, Jenny Stubbs, have opened Frios stores in Wetumpka, Tallassee and Prattville. Troy Stubbs said they’ve focused on downtowns to help reverse a trend of declining city centers.
“Our commitment is to better downtowns,” he said. “That’s our goal. We don’t put Frios Gourmet Pops in the highly trafficked shopping districts.”
The downtown Montgomery store features high ceilings and the original floor and brick work from the former Belk Department Store. It also has a children’s area. Frios is open noon to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday during the winter. They plan to extend the hours once the weather warms up.
